May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Did you know that 1 in 5 American’s deal with mental health issues? 1 in 5….with suicide being in the top 10 causes of death. These numbers are staggering, especially when I am included in them.

What I see as a patient and as a friend to many who also fight daily, the resources for treatment are not always readily available or affordable. The other issue I find is that there is still a large stigma around mental health. No one wants to talk about one or admit it could be the root cause of many issues. They would rather talk around it.

However, there are organizations working to improve mental healthcare in the United States and globally.

NAMI – National Alliance on Mental Health. I highly encourage you to check out their CureStigma campaign!

MHA – Mental Health America . I love their #4Mind4Body campaign going on this month!

AFSP – American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

If you or a loved one are battling a mental health condition, please talk about it and seek professional help. The statistics shouldn’t be this high and there is hope.

If you are in crisis, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741741.
