Why Fitness? 

As my personal journey to finding balance progresses, I find myself thinking about fitness a lot.  Why do the experts recommend it? Why is it so hard for me to stick with it?  How do others make a career out of it?  If someone has all those answers, comment! I’d love to hear it!  I don’t for sure but here is what I do know. 

Looking at the most recent complete mortality data, the number one leading cause of death (2012) in the US was diseases of the heart.  Number five was stroke. Number 10 was suicide.

Experts at the American Heart Association recommend 30-40 minutes of activity a day, 5 days a week. It also doesn’t have to be continuous, break it up if you need to! It will reduce cholesterol and blood pressure which will in turn reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke! 

Sounds good to me, but wait, there is more!  That number 10 reason, suicide.  As many of you know that is an issue close to my heart.  Exercise for the win here too!  While the exact reasons are still being discovered, we do know:

1. It’s a mood enhancer

2. It can treat and maybe even prevent anxiety 

3. Increase serotonin and decrease depression 

4. Normalize sleep
Well these are enough to convince me to try to start the habit again!  I know I often go out to hard and eager which is unsustainable. So I am finding a balance in my life/fitness balance.  I encourage you to do the same!
