The beginning

Ironic, and maybe a bit poetic, that this first post comes on a day that I am traveling. I am headed to Philadelphia for the Susan G. Komen 3- Day Walk.  A 60 mile walk to bring funds and awareness to breast cancer. A disease that has touched both family and friends and one which is in much need of a cure.

60 miles, just so happens to equal the number of pounds I have to lose, 60.  No doubt this will be on mind throughout the weekend.

Putting that number out there is terrifying. No one wants to admit just how much they have let themselves go. However, it is also cathartic.  It’s like a hidden stress is now out in the world, ready to be conquered!

I’m not sure where this journey will take me, but I have some goals in mind.

Mid-year goal is to complete the Shamrock Half-Marathon in March. I have a love-hate relationship with running, so this is a stretch goal for me.

Ultimate goal isn’t to lose 60 pounds in one year, Oct. 13, 2017. That is my target but I know there will be twists and turns and unexpected challenges.  However I am prepared to take them one by one, head on, and with fierce determimation.

I have already taken first steps towards this journey in the last couple of days. I am tracking my calories with MyFitnessPal, currently my goal is between 1100 and 1500 depending on workouts. I am using a ratio of 35% carb, 40% protein, and 25% fat.   This is based on pouring through many articles about “best” macros for weight loss and athletes.  I am NOT necessarily following a single “diet” plan as I have done them all with minor success at best.  I am truly following the burn more than you take in philosophy which just makes sense to me.

I also have shifted my diet more towards vegan/vegetarian.   This is a highly personal decision and certainly not for everyone. Again my decision was based on research and listening to how I feel. I just feel better without animal protein or dairy, so that is what I am following. I also am giving myself grace and not beating myself up if every once in a while that piece of chocolate calls to me and I give in. This is a lifestyle change not a short-term unsustainable course. I want to always be comfortable with my choices and know I am eating to fuel the body I want to have.

I will explore more of how I got here and the emotions behind it soon.  This is the first step in doing things right and honest.  I hope you join me!
