No Facebook Friends

Yesterday, I took a drastic measure, I turned my Facebook profile into a Page and deactivated my account. Essentially unfriending all 1100+ “friends” on Facebook.

I then set-up a new Facebook profile, with no friends! I rejoined my favorite groups, and am slowly following pages that provide meaningful content.

Why would someone do that in 2020 you might ask? One word, anxiety. Every political opinion, thought, and complaint that I saw on Facebook just fostered my own feelings of hopelessness and despair. No longer is social media being used by the majority to connect in any meaningful manner, instead it is a place to boast, to demean others, to share thoughtless opinions or unsubstantiated “news”. Now, granted, there are the few that have tried to maintain a sense of decorum. That continue to post pictures of their kids, or dogs, or favorite meals. However, those were too few and far between for me. I had to get out of the negativity cycle, so I did.

I may eventually add friends to my new profile. I will certainly be far more critical of what is there and what I expose myself to. But for now, I am enjoying a feed full of only those things that mean the most to me. I feel at peace for the first time in a while. It is well with my soul.
